For your end-of- summer readings, I recommend the current issue of Social Policy. Called “Regime Change Begins at Home,” this issue features articles from a number of social change organizers, activists and leaders who argue that we may be in a ‘movement moment’ in US history. Significant numbers of people are being galvanized by the possibilities for change in a post-Bush world. Progressive social change organizations need to take advantage of this moment. Some of the questions addressed in this issue have to do with how progressive organizations and networks can use these changing times to move beyond reactive politics toward more purposeful, transformational social change. How do we shape the nature and direction of social change, instead of reacting to, or running to catch up with it?
Among the contributions is an article called “Building Organizations in a Movement Moment,” co-written by Beth Zemsky and GPP’s own Dave Mann. It features examples from the work of ISAIAH in Minneapolis, a group with whom GPP has worked for over four years on worldview and strategy for social transformation. Non-subcribers can read Beth and Dave’s article on the Social Policy site.
