Standing Together In the Face of Right-Wing Attacks

Which right-wing fear-mongerer will you imitate this Halloween? They are far more scary and dangerous than the traditional Halloween ghosts and ghouls. And lampooning Glenn Beck can be very cathartic. But we need to do more than don masks. We need to stand up to the red-baiters and spewers of hate. And we need to stand together.

Community organizing got a lot of publicity during the Presidential campaign. Their voter registration drives made a real difference. Their constituencies (which are more diverse, youthful and progressive than the conservative base) represent a future that the Right fears.

And now, right-wing activists and their corporate sponsors will do anything to destroy groups that organize African Americans, recent immigrants, low-income families and workers. They came after ACORN, then SEIU, and they now are making their way down a long list of faith-based and community networks. A lot is going on behind-the-scenes, as well, to drive a wedge between faith-based and secular progressive groups.

We must stand up to these attacks, and to red-baiting in general. In order to do this, we need a coordinated strategy across our networks and movements.

Stay tuned for more on ways that we can stand together, get out ahead of the haters and redirect the conversation about the kind of society and economy we want to build together.
